soem of the best books I have read lately are by an author called Lawana Blackwell. She could fall all three of the romance, chick lit, or even historical fiction categories.
She has two different series, Tales of London and the Greshma Chronicles. The are both set in England during the late 1800's and deal with the adventures on an extended family. I could not put any of these books down and I was so eager to finish one so that I could start a new one.
She has yet another series of these books called Victorian Serenade which I am going to start reading soon.
"Where the Heart Is" by Billie Letts
Great book! This is about a 17 year old girl who is pregnant and abandoned by her boyfriend at a Wal-Mart and ends up having to live there until she can find somewhere else to stay. I liked this book because it has a lot of themes appearing throughout it: The concept of family (your family and friends can be one in the same) and that there's more to life than meets the eye.
Dreamland by Sarah Dessen
Caitlin's perfect sister decides to skip out of town, leaving her family fretting. Nobody knows where her sister has gone. While her parents worry about her sister, Caitlin begins to find her own life, one that involves a boy, Rogerson. Rogerson seems like the perfect boy, a boy that can stop the turmoil in Caitlin's life. Instead he creates more. This story is about physical abuse and so much more.
Miss Smithers by Susan Juby
I loved Alice, I Think so I had to read Miss Smithers. Alice was homeschooled but recently made the transition back to public schooling. (She had not gone to public school since kindergarten. She was removed from kindergarten after she realized she did not fit in.) In Miss Smithers, she is entered into the local teen girl pagent. When she entered, it was all about the $400 spending money she was given, but later she was pulling to win. Things get turned upside down, as they always do with Alice, when the zine she writes ends up in the hands of....everybody! This book is entertaining and hilarious!
I love the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books. Ann Brashares captures emotion, reality, and the connection between true friends. I love the way she depicts the "sisters'" tales. Her books taught me many things but most of all, were entertaining. I could not put them down!
Dreamland by Sarah Dessen
I did not like this book one bit. In fact, I thought it was the worst book ever... but that might be biased. I could not get into it at all. This book depicts the main charactor and her boyfriend get very serious and I personally do not want to read about that. I did not read past that because the story line did not interest me. Maybe that is the authors fault. Perhaps I would like it if it were written in a different style
This Lullaby - Sarah Dessen
Great read! Makes you think about love and what it means to love someone. It's about a girl whose mom has been married 5 times. Because of her mom's, um, romances, the girl doesn't believe in love. She calculates all her relationships. Until she meets Dexter, a persistent member of a rock Band. With him, everything changes.
Secrets of My Hollywood Life by Jen Calonita
The famous Kaitlin Burke has been on the soap opera Family Affairs since she was little. She has always shared the spotlight with her obnoxious co-star Sky Mackenzie, who is always trying to give Kaitlin bad press. But, when Kaitlin decides on taking hiatus to go to school, she goes undercover as Rachel Rogers, finding love, friendship, and fun on the way. But when her sidekick goes missing, she feel instantly threatened, having all her school information on it too. She wonders will her cover, Rachel Rogers, be leaked to the press, or will she be able to keep going through schooling? Its all in this dramatic novel, keeping you on the edge of your seat. You won’t be able to put the book down. This book had me instantly hooked and I found myself not being able to put it down.
Airhead by Meg Cabot
Sixteen-year-old Emerson Watts was just an average girl who never cared that much for fashion. However, the rest of the world (except for her best and only friend, Christopher) is obsessed with Nikki Howard: the world’s most famous teen supermodel. In an attempt to save her sister from a falling plasma screen, Emerson nearly dies. With the help of Dr. Holcombe, she survives—now living the life of Nikki Howard. Literally. In my opinion, this book is really good; it shows you a real star’s life and how hard it is to maintain a perfect image. Even though the story starts off slow it eventually speeds up.
The Clique: P.S. I Loathe You by Lisi Harrison
Now that the boy-fast is finally over, love sickness is sweeping through the Pretty Committee. Massie decides to create a cheerleading squad after failing at soccer; also so that she can watch Dempsey and make Derrington jealous all at the same time. But what will happen when Layne and someone from the PC are both caught with Dempsey?
This book and the series are real and fake at the same time. The boy drama makes you want to burst out laughing, while the clothes (Marc Jacobs, Christian Dior, etc.) make you wonder how in the world these eight graders can afford it all. This book is great in any way you look at it: stupid, yet funny; full of drama, yet touching; insane fashion, yet cute.
Secrets of My Hollywood Life by Jen Calonita
Sixteen-year-old Kaitlin Burke has a life that anyone would kill to have; she's one of Teen People's "25 Hottest Stars Under 25," has been starring in "Family Affairs" for the past twelve years, and supposedly best friends with Skye Mackenzie. Little do people know that she's been longing to have a normal life. When she attends her best friend Liz's high school as a British student named Rachel Rogers, she realizes that she can't handle two lives. In my opinion, this book gives you a glimpse of a real Hollywood star's life and how hard it is to battle all the tabloids.
